Overview

The Global Extremes Platform (GEP) builds upon and integrates activities on weather and climate extremes across WCRP. It is designed to make a contribution to improving the ways of delivering science, information, and data concerning extremes in a well-synthesized format for the climate research community, policymakers, and other users of climate science. To achieve this, GEP is developing a public-facing database that can offer global extreme indices data products derived from station observations, reanalysis products, and model simulations. GEP is also establishing a Working Group on Event Attribution that aims at developing expert guidance to ensure event attribution information, particularly in an operational context, is clear, robust, and consistent.

GEP centres on three main themes:

  • Extreme Indices
  • Event Attribution
  • Assessment of Weather and Climate Extremes

Leadership

Name Affiliation Country Function
Xuebin Zhang University of Victoria (UVic) Canada GEP co-chair
Sonia I. Seneviratne ETH Zurich Switzerland GEP co-chair
Botao Zhou Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST) China GEP-SU director

Oversight for GEP activities will be provided by a Scientific Steering Group (SSG), whose membership will be open for nomination.

Support Unit

With support from the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST), the WCRP Global Extremes Platform Support Unit (GEP-SU) was officially set up on November 28, 2022 in Nanjing, China. GEP-SU provides assistance to the activities that are agreed between GEP and the Regional Information for Society (RIfS) Scientific Steering Group, and works closely with the RIfS International Project Office, and in cooperation with the WCRP Secretariat, to implement the GEP objectives and facilitate the development of scientific, educational and outreach activities through climate community engagement.
